The challenge for cement companies is to balance the growing demand for cement with its environmental implications by developing and championing sustainable solutions. Star Cement is pioneer in incorporating environmental concerns into our decision making process.
We continually strive to play a key role in finding effective and responsible ways to preserve the environment - a Cement Sustainability Initiative. We as a company are committed to improving our sustainable footprint in the identified areas of waste management, energy reduction, water conservation and emission reduction which are relevant to the cement industry.
As part of our commitment, we compile our carbon footprint every year. We have also identified safety as one focus area and continuously improve our safety performance in our plants.
Star Cement strives to adopt an eco-friendly approach across all areas of its operations. We are one of the earliest proponents of alternate fuel usage, waste heat recovery, alternate raw materials and other environment friendly practices in the country.
ASSOCIATION WITH CEMENT SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE (CSI)
UltraTech voluntarily joined the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI), a part of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development in 2006, in which Star Cement is an integral part. Our association with CSI has helped us gain access to the best practices in the cement industry and benchmark our own sustainability practices with global players.
The Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) is a global effort by 24 major cement producers with operations in more than 100 countries who believe that there is a strong business case for the pursuit of sustainable development. Collectively, these companies account for around 30% of the world's cement production and range in size from large multinationals to smaller local producers. To date, the CSI remains one of the largest global sustainability programs ever undertaken by a single industry sector.
